Ear wax Build-up

Ear wax build-up occurs when earwax accumulates in the ear canal, causing a blockage. This can result in decreased hearing, discomfort, and in some cases, pain. Earwax is naturally produced by the body to protect the ear from dust, bacteria, and other foreign particles. However, overproduction or improper cleaning can lead to build-up and blockages.

Microsuction ear wax removal

Microsuction is a gentle and non-invasive procedure where a healthcare professional uses a specially designed suction device to remove ear wax from the ear canal. Unlike ear syringing, candling, and irrigation, which involve flushing the ear with water, Microsuction uses a gentle suction method to safely remove ear wax without the risk of damage to the eardrum.

Symptoms of an ear wax build-up

The symptoms of ear wax build-up include:

If you experience any of these symptoms, it is important to seek the advice of a healthcare professional to determine the cause and receive appropriate treatment.

Ear syringing

Ear syringing in Balham

Ear syringing, also known as ear irrigation, removes earwax with a stream of warm water flushed into the ear canal to loosen and flush out the wax. While the term ear syringing is commonly interchangeably used for ear irrigation, the primary difference is that for ear syringing the professional uses a manual syringe which is known to have a number of disadvantages, potential risks, and limitations. Ear irrigation on the other hand is performed with an irrigation machine. For this procedure, the water is released into the ear canal at a calibrated pressure level. Notwithstanding, this procedure is still not as safe as microsuction or e-microsuction. The consensus amongst professionals is that microsuction should be used as the primary method for ear wax removal in clinic.

What people are asking

Travel from Balham to our 126 Wigmore St clinic to get instant Ear relief in 37 minutes.

Yes, however, you may need to make a quick trip out of Balham to our Wigmore St clinic. We have checked and it’s only a 37-minute journey. And if you’d like an even more convenient option, we can offer you an ear wax removal home visit.

Ear microsuction can be likened to an ear vacuum. It is essentially the process of cleaning out your ear wax safely with a suction machine whilst using a microscope as the primary viewing equipment. The suction machine is used at calibrated pressure levels to remove ear wax safely from your ears. “Micro” refers to the microscope used to look into your ears during this procedure, while “suction” refers to the machine used to draw out the ear wax, hence “microsuction”.

Endoscopic wax removal is a more advanced option for looking into your ears during ear cleaning as it provides a real-time view of your ears. We always offer our customers endoscopic wax removal as a first option because it is the most advanced technique. Most of our clients enjoy seeing the video recording of the ear cleaning process. We use our CE-marked endoscope called VerifEYEd View.

Various techniques can be used for professional ear cleaning. The best technique depends on the nature of ear wax to be removed.

Our preferred method at Verified Hearing is endoscopic wax removal using a suction machine because this is the most advanced technique. However, in some cases, we would need to use a sterilised instrument, such as a Jobson Horne or ear hook, to remove the ear wax gently. Patients sensitive to loud sounds or who suffer from tinnitus may find the sound of a suction machine unpleasant. So, we tend to avoid using it in such cases.

Although ear irrigation is becoming less and less popular, there are times when this is the most suitable technique for ear wax removal. In such cases, we do not hesitate to employ it, using only the safest irrigation machine.

Only when it causes symptoms or discomfort. For many, natural jaw movements from talking or chewing can help expel wax. At Verified Hearing, we offer free 6 monthly reviews to all our patients so we’ll be able to advise you when you need to remove your ear wax.

Do not use cotton buds. Use earol spray for 3-5 days to soften the ear wax and then book a professional ear wax removal appointment. We will use either microsuction, ear irrigation or specialised manual tools to remove the wax from your child’s ears.
