Earwax build-up
Earwax build-up is a common condition where excess earwax accumulates in the ear canal, causing discomfort, ringing in the ears, or partial hearing loss. Over time, the earwax can harden and become difficult to remove on its own. If you feel you have a build-up of wax, we can help you.

Symptoms of ear wax buildup
Symptoms of earwax build-up may include:
- Tinnitus or ringing in the ears
- Partial hearing loss or muffled hearing
- Ear pain or discomfort
- Itching or itching sensation in the ear
- Dizziness or vertigo
- Fullness in the ear
If you experience any of these symptoms, it is important to seek the advice of a healthcare professional for earwax removal. Ignoring symptoms of earwax build-up can lead to more serious conditions, such as infections or temporary hearing loss.
Microsuction ear wax removal
Microsuction ear wax removal is a safe and effective procedure for removing excess earwax from the ear canal. This procedure is performed by a healthcare professional using a special tool, called a micro-suction device, which is specifically designed to remove earwax without damaging the delicate skin and tissues of the ear. Microsuction is highly effective in removing even the most impacted earwax and provides immediate relief from symptoms such as ringing in the ears, partial hearing loss, or discomfort. It is a preferred method for earwax removal due to its safety and effectiveness.
Why we don’t irrigate (syringe) or offer ear candling
Safety concerns: Ear irrigation involves flushing water into the ear canal, which can cause damage to the delicate skin and tissues of the ear. Ear candling is a controversial practice that has not been scientifically proven to be effective and can be dangerous, as it involves burning candles near the ear.
Ineffectiveness: Irrigation and ear candling may not be effective in removing impacted earwax and can push the wax further into the ear canal, making it more difficult to remove.
Preferred methods: Micro-suction or manual removal are the preferred methods for earwax removal as they are safe, effective, and minimally invasive. These methods use special tools to gently remove the earwax without damaging the ear.
Therefore, ear syringing should be performed under the guidance of a healthcare professional and with caution, considering the potential risks and discomfort associated with the procedure.

Myself and my daughter are very happy with our appointment.Eric Walter2023-07-12A great first time experience, very informative procedure and carried out the work in a first class environment and would definitely go back in six months .Brython Caley-Davies2023-07-11Simona Zajicova2023-07-11The doctor was very nice. He checked my son's ears, but there was no microsuction needed. My son had no earwax in his ears that needed to be removed. Therefore, I don't understand why I was charged £120 for something that was not done. In cases like this, clients should get some of their money back, don't you think? It's common in other clinics.Marcel Vandenbussche2023-07-07Google rating score: 4.8 of 5, based on 82 reviews

Ear Wax Removal FAQs
What people are asking
Yes, however, you may need to make a quick trip out of Paddington to our Wigmore St clinic. We have checked and it’s only a 12-minute journey. And if you’d like an even more convenient option, we can offer you an ear wax removal home visit.
Ear microsuction can be likened to an ear vacuum. It is essentially the process of cleaning out your ear wax safely with a suction machine whilst using a microscope as the primary viewing equipment. The suction machine is used at calibrated pressure levels to remove ear wax safely from your ears. “Micro” refers to the microscope used to look into your ears during this procedure, while “suction” refers to the machine used to draw out the ear wax, hence “microsuction”.
Endoscopic wax removal is a more advanced option for looking into your ears during ear cleaning as it provides a real-time view of your ears. We always offer our customers endoscopic wax removal as a first option because it is the most advanced technique. Most of our clients enjoy seeing the video recording of the ear cleaning process. We use our CE-marked endoscope called VerifEYEd View.
Various techniques can be used for professional ear cleaning. The best technique depends on the nature of ear wax to be removed.
Our preferred method at Verified Hearing is endoscopic wax removal using a suction machine because this is the most advanced technique. However, in some cases, we would need to use a sterilised instrument, such as a Jobson Horne or ear hook, to remove the ear wax gently. Patients sensitive to loud sounds or who suffer from tinnitus may find the sound of a suction machine unpleasant. So, we tend to avoid using it in such cases.
Although ear irrigation is becoming less and less popular, there are times when this is the most suitable technique for ear wax removal. In such cases, we do not hesitate to employ it, using only the safest irrigation machine.
Yes. We have a senior paediatric audiologist who is part of our team. We can safely clear ear wax from your child’s ear(s).
