What are Clogged ears?
Clogged ears, also known as impacted or blocked ears, occur when the ear canal becomes obstructed, making it difficult for sound waves to reach the eardrum. The ear canal can become blocked due to a buildup of earwax, fluid from an ear infection, or other physical obstructions. Clogged ears can cause discomfort, a sensation of fullness, muffled hearing, and in some cases, temporary hearing loss. The condition can be easily treated in most cases with over-the-counter ear drops, ear irrigation, or manual removal of the obstruction. In some cases, a doctor may need to intervene and remove the blockage. Chronic or persistent clogged ears may indicate an underlying health condition and should be evaluated by an Audiologist. It is important to not attempt to remove earwax or any other obstruction using sharp objects, as this can cause injury to the ear canal or eardrum.
Why Microsuction?
Microsuction is a safe and effective method of removing earwax and other obstructions from the ear canal. It involves using a gentle suction device to remove the blockage, without the need for irrigation or other instruments that can be invasive or cause damage to the ear. At Verified Hearing we perform e-microsuction which is considered to be the gold standard for earwax removal. The procedure is quick, painless, and can provide immediate relief from symptoms such as clogged ears, muffled hearing, and discomfort. Microsuction is especially useful for people with narrow or curved ear canals, perforated eardrums, or other ear conditions that may not be suitable for other methods of earwax removal.
Negative outcomes from ear syringing
We do not offer ear syringing. Ear syringing is a method of removing earwax and other obstructions from the ear canal using water in a manual syringe. Ear syringing can have potential side effects. Some of the common side effects include:
- Pain or discomfort: The pressure and force of the water used in ear syringing can cause pain or discomfort in the ear.
- Infection: Improper technique or unsanitary conditions during ear syringing can increase the risk of infection in the ear canal.
- Perforated eardrum: The pressure and force of the water used in ear irrigation can cause a perforated eardrum, a tear in the thin membrane that separates the ear canal from the middle ear.
- Tinnitus: Ear syringing can cause temporary ringing or buzzing in the ears (tinnitus).

Ear candling
Ear candling, also known as ear coning, is a traditional alternative therapy that involves inserting a hollow candle into the ear canal and lighting it to create suction and remove earwax and other debris. However, ear candling is not considered safe and can have serious side effects, including:
- Burns and injury to the ear canal, eardrum, or face
- Increased risk of infection
- Impaction of earwax or other debris further into the ear canal
- Temporary hearing loss
Additionally, there is no scientific evidence to support the claims that ear candling can effectively remove earwax or improve hearing. It is recommended to avoid ear candling and to seek professional medical care for ear microsuction.
